Choosing the right turf for your landscape is crucial to its success and your happiness! With the right lawn, you’ll be enjoying years and years of its beauty and health. The wrong lawn for your landscape area however can result in a whole load of extra work and maintenance – that’s time and money you won’t want to spend! Here’s what to look for when considering which turf is right for you:

  • Sun vs shade – It’s important to understand the amount of sun your area will be exposed to. The more sun, the more options you have in suitable lawn types. Consider factors such as surrounding trees and shrubs that may grow over time to create more shade across your lawn, or other obstacles that may get built and create more shade for your area. If your area is at risk of more shade, rule out turf types that are shade intolerant.

  • Water vs drought – Water conditions are an important consideration when choosing the lawn that’s right for your landscape. Some grasses may look withered but stay alive during extreme conditions, while others can look great for longer periods, but may die without adequate water.

  • Salt – You’re likely to have considered what salt water or salt spray does to all sorts of things if you’re affected by it – like if you live near a beach – and for lawns it’s no different. If your landscape is at risk of salt spray, you’ll need to consider salt tolerant lawn types.

  • It’s use – If your lawn’s going to see a lot of heavy traffic – kids, pets, entertaining, cars, or other heavy and ongoing wear and tear consider a self-repairing, vigorous growing lawn type.

  • Aesthetics – What do you want your lawn to look like? How do you want it to feel? Different varieties don’t just grow differently; they also look and feel different too.

  • Budget – As with most things, the more you spend on quality now, the less you’ll spend overall. Consider this when determining your new-lawn budget.

  • Get help – If you’re not sure what the best lawn type for your landscape and needs is, get help from a professional. You’re always welcome to visit our turf farm to see and touch our turf varieties and talk to a turf farmer for help on which one is the perfect lawn type for your needs!
