Looking After Your Zoysia Australis Lawn

Watering Guide

For best results, water your Zoysia Australis lawn weekly to fortnightly. Once established, Zoysia Australis is hardy and resilient, quickly recovering in harsh conditions and warmer climates. Water only when the grass shows signs of dryness, such as wilted leaves, and avoid over-watering during cooler winter months to prevent water-logging. Ensure thorough soaking of the top 100mm of soil for deep root penetration. These practices will keep your Zoysia Australis lawn lush, vibrant, and thriving throughout the year.

"For best results, water early in the morning to enhance water absorption and promote overall plant health."

Mowing

To maintain a healthy Zoysia Australis lawn, it's recommended to mow weekly to fortnightly during the growing season. This practice helps remove old growth and promotes new, dense growth for a lush appearance.

Ideally, mow Zoysia Australis between 15mm and 40mm, adjusting the height slightly higher in shaded areas.

"It's crucial to use sharp mower blades to avoid tearing the soft, dark green leaves. Ensure to cut one-third of the leaf blade length at a time."

fertilising compressed

Fertilising

Zoysia Australis, was specially developed for its lower nutrient needs compared to traditional warm-season grasses. Fertiliser use should be minimal, typically requires only about one-third the usual amount of fertilizer; only fertilise if your lawn looks hungry and loses colour. From early spring to mid to late summer, if needed.

"If needed, the optimal time to fertilise, is from early spring to mid to late summer."

Pest Control-min

Pest Control

Zoysia Australis is fairly equipped to handle most pest invasions. Grubs that can affect it include army grub and lawn grub. Monitor your lawn and treat at the first signs of pest damage

We recommend using a preventive grub control such as Acelepryn GR which will give you 6 months' pest control

"Those harmful army worm lawn grubs are generally more active in the summer and autumn months."

Weed Control

Weed Control

Zoysia Australis has naturally occurring allelopathic characteristics, a phenomenon where one plant inhibits the growth of another through the release of natural chemicals. This trait helps reduce the growth of weeds and other unwanted turf species in your Zoysia Australis lawn. However, there will be times when weed control is necessary. Most available chemical weed products can be used on Zoysia Australis, but always read the label and consult us at Green Life Turf for recommended products before any application.

Alternatively you can use a pre-emergent weed control such as Oxafert, which will give you 3 months' weed control.

"We suggest not to use weed and feed products, or any products containing the chemical active Dicanda."

Dethatching & top dressing-2

De-thatching & Top Dressing

De-thatching your Zoysia Australis lawn is not always necessary. However, if you find your lawn becoming very spongy and thick, it is a good idea to do some de-thatching.

Top dressing is not always necessary. Zoysia Australis has a tight growth habit which will fill in most imperfections in the subsoil.

"If you find your lawn bumpy when mowing, try top dressing your lawn to help fill in any imperfections and make a smoother mow."

Watering Guide

For established Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo lawns, less frequent and deeper soakings are recommended to encourage strong root growth. A deep water every week using a good quality sprinkler at a depth of about 150mm is usually enough.

Of course, at the first signs of the lawn drying out, you will need to water your lawn again using the deep soaking system.

"The deeper the water goes, the deeper the roots grow; and the deeper the roots, the more durable the lawn is."

Fertilising

Fertilise your Sir Walter lawn 3 to 4 times per year using a good quality NPK-based fertiliser (Nitrogen; Phosphorus; Potassium). A balanced fertiliser will give your lawn the essential nutrients it requires to keep it well maintained, healthy and looking great.

We recommend using our blend that we use on our turf farms: Health Booster Lawn & Plant Food Fertiliser.

"Give your lawn a complete feed: add other elements (micronutrients & other macro- nutrients) to your fertilising program."
