Fact is, most Australian lawns are warm-season grasses: they actively grow in the warmer months, and in the cooler seasons they go dormant which means they’re alive, but they’re not actively growing.

What does this look like for a healthy winter lawn?

Slow Growth –

Warm-season grass growth should slow down growth in winter months. You’ll notice you won’t need to mow it as much! Slow-growth in winter is not a sign of your lawn dying off.

Discolouration & Brown Lawn –

As a warm-season grass goes dormant, it will begin to lose its colour. This may not look like the beautiful lush lawn you created over the last three seasons, but it is very normal. Discolouration across your grass in winter is not a sign of your lawn dying off.

Thinning Grass Leaves –

As part of the dormancy, your grass leaves may also thin out. Don’t worry, it will store its energy in the stem and roots. Thinning leaves in winter is not a sign of your lawn dying off.

Drying Out –

Likewise, as part of the dormancy stage, warm-season lawngrasses will dry out in winter. A little drying out in winter is not a sign of your lawn dying off.

So if your lawn is looking a bit brown, a bit dry, a bit gloomy, it’s not all bad news.
