Close mow
Aside from the aesthetics, a close mow has a few other health benefits too:
(i) Weeding. Weeds are likely to have grown in your grass over the winter months when you mowed your lawn less. With modern lawns such as Sir Walter DNA Certified lawn, a close mowing will clear up your winter weeds.
(ii) Dethatching. Thatch is basically stems and roots that aren’t decomposed and gather near the surface of your soil. Some grass types build up this spongy thatch layer from summer and through winter. A close mow will usually do the trick to dethatch your lawn.

Weed (older lawn types and stubborn weeds)
If yours are stubborn weeds or if your lawn is an older grass then you may need to consider spraying your weeds out. Use Lawn Lovers Buffalo Weed Control for great results.

Remove any invading grasses
Lawns can be invaded by other uninvited grass varieties for a number of reasons, and over winter (when you may be less vigilant) is a great time for them to sneak in on you. Pull out the invading grass by hand, or try using a weed wand. -
Dethatch (older lawn types)
If your lawn is an older lawn type such as Couch, your close mow may not have fully
dethatched your lawn. If that’s the case, consider using a scarifying machine (you can hire these from a variety of hire outlets). If your lawn is a type of buffalo, your close mow should have got rid of any thatch layer on your lawn.

Feed
And finally, apply fertiliser. All lawn types need a good feed and a little helping hand. We use our special blend Organic Health Booster on our turf farm with the perfect NPK composition for our turf. In most Australian climates, we recommend fertilising at the start of spring and then again four weeks later. There are also a number of other brands that provide all purpose lawn food; choose one that's right for your lawn.
