Which grass is the most shade tolerant?

Over the past year we’ve been reviewing what our customers have been asking when they start thinking about their lawn and deciding on laying new turf. So much has come out of the research, but there are some clear questions that just keep on coming up. What’s been the most frequently asked question?

“Which grass is the most shade tolerant?”

In a State usually filled with mostly warmth and sunshine, it’s interesting to find its population finding the need for shade-tolerant lawn. So why has shade tolerant lawn become such a necessity in Australia?

  • Homes are getting upsized - renovated or rebuilt - leaving them shadowing over our lawns.
  • The preservation of our trees has allowed them to grow up tall and strong, but they are now overhanging and shading our lawns.
  • Residents are installing overhead sails to protect outdoor living areas from UV rays and heat.
  • Or its simply the desire to add beautiful lawn exactly where we want it to be.

Whatever the reason, there’s no doubt about it: Sydney-siders are looking for shade-tolerant lawn.

So which is the most shade tolerant lawn? Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo.

Turf: Not ‘Just Turf’

Like most other industries, the turf industry has evolved with humans and their needs. After shade-tolerant imports failed in Australian conditions, 1996 saw the creation of Sir Walter, a grass that was more resilient to disease and pests, drought resistant, thrived in shade and sun, and stayed green throughout the year.

That was 20 years and a great number of Sir Walter lawn installations ago, and our Sir Walter Buffalo lawn continues to thrive and be Australia’s number 1 variety of turf.

Sir Walter is now DNA Certified, which means you can be sure of its absolute purity and the quality with which it has been grown, harvested, delivered and installed. Plus it comes with a 10 year warranty.

Of course, like all living things, Sir Walter needs some sun to survive. If the area you’re thinking of laying turf sees less than three hours of sun per day, you might want to consider an alternative.
