Why Winter is a Problem for Lawns - and What You Can Do About It!

There’s no doubt about it, winter brings problems for even the most beautiful lawns. You want your yard to show off the beautiful lush, green lawns of summer, but the cold weather combined with shorter daylight hours means your warm-season grass will go dormant in winter and begin to lose its colour.

The problem doesn’t end there. As your grass turns shades lighter, it attracts less sunlight and soil temperatures continue to decline, further contributing to your lawn’s state of hibernation.

But while your lawn will naturally take on a shade of brown - and the colder your climate, the more colour it will lose - and its growth will slow down, that doesn’t mean your lawn needs to look patchy and be unhealthy. In fact, it doesn’t even mean you have to live with brown lawn in winter!

Here are our tips to creating the healthiest and best looking lawns to be the envy of all your neighbours!

Easy Tips for Creating & Maintaining a Beautiful Lawn Across Winter:

  • In May:
    • Look for wintergrass and remove it, fast!
  • From Autumn:
    • Increase your mowing height to increase nutrients to the grass.
    • Mow your lawn less frequently.
    • Decrease the amount of water your lawn’s getting to prevent turf disease and rot.
    • Fertilise your lawn using the right fertiliser.
    • Kill off your other winter weeds.
    • Prune back trees that will cause additional shade to your lawn area.
    • Wherever possible, minimise the amount of shade your lawn’s getting. Think about how much you’ll use your outdoor furniture, sails, play equipment, etc, and whether it’s possible to move them off your lawn until Spring has returned.
  • In Winter:
    • Continue killing off weeds that pop up through the winter.
    • At the end of Winter, spike and aerate the soil to begin its rejuvenation process!
    • To instantly green up your lawn, use ColourGuard lawn paint, a pet and environmentally friendly, 100% organic turf grass colourant!

It’s not too late to start! Winter’s taking its time again this year, so why not spend some time out on your lawn this weekend and catch up? Your future lawn will thank you!
